Summer Term Newsletter - 3
8 July 2010

We have had two big school trips in the last few weeks. Years 5 and 6 visited the British Museum and I am proud to say a member of the public stopped one of our governors and commented on the childrens' fantastic behaviour. Robins class visited the beach yesterday, and we all had a great day! Thank you to all the parents and friends of the school who helped with these trips.
Well done to our Year 3 and 4 cricket team, who won the tournament at Downlands. Cricket seems to be one of our strengths!
More very good news –we raised £1,489.45 for the NSPCC. This is a magnificent amount; congratulations to all the children who took part and everyone who supported them.
Sports Day was a great success, thanks to all the help and support we had from governors, parents and friends of the school, including lots of our past pupils from Downlands, and brilliant organisation on the part of Mrs Ritchie and Mrs Moyse. We also hosted the NEARS Athletics event for the first time. It was a great afternoon attended by 4 other schools, and we came a very close second.
I am delighted to tell you that the PTA float for the St Lawrence Fair came 2nd last Saturday! The PTA committee would like to thank everyone who helped prepare the float and who took part on the day. I would like to thank them for their huge amounts of work and commitment to the school.
100 Club winner for June is Mrs Caroline Fowler. There are still numbers available if you would like to join. |
Congratulations to Fiona Fisher who got married last Saturday. We are all trying hard to remember to call her Mrs Downs!
This Friday, 9th July, some of our Year 6 Entrepreneurs will be running stalls outside school to raise money for the Kasisi Children’s Home. These are enterprises they have set up themselves, so please support them if you can.
Do take a look at our school field to see the new shaded seating/stage area we have just had installed. There is also a fabulous dragonfly seat, paid for by the PTA. The next stage of our grounds development is to put an artificial grass base under the willow (which is growing fantastically well), which we hope will happen this term. In the summer holidays we will be building 2 shelters on the edge of the field, to give shade for the summer, and also replacing the adventure trail to make it safer and slightly smaller, as we are having a problem with tree roots coming up through the bark. I am sure you will agree we are making the grounds really interesting and attractive for the children.
