Skylarks Class - Autumn Term Learning

Welcome back and welcome to Skylarks class.
Hope you all enjoyed the summer holiday because Skylarks are about to fly off on a learning holiday journey again!

We shall be checking in at Skylarks Airport with our labelled baggage and own passports ready to board Albourne Airways Flight 123 to find out about seaside holidays, past and present. Please check out flight details in our class role play area.

We shall start by considering holidays today, by collecting data about our own holiday locations and marking these on a large world map. We will be writing our own postcards and checking we know how to write addresses correctly. We will be reading story texts about holidays, thinking about characters and settings and using sequential language to write our own story.

In History we shall be asking you for your own holiday memories and will be finding out what holidays were like a hundred years ago. It will be interesting to see how things have changed, but also if any seaside activities have stayed the same. Also, in Geography, we will be finding out where Barnaby Bear goes on holiday and learning more about the weather in different holiday locations, particularly the Caribbean.

In Design and Technology we are going on a learning journey to find out what makes a good fruit salad. We shall be tasting different fruits and then write instructions to tell others how to make a healthy salad. This will be linked to Maths, where we shall be weighing ingredients necessary to carry out a recipe. We hope to use fruit as a focus for our Art work too, making observational drawing, using water colours and finishing up with sewing a fruit collage.

Our Science learning is primarily about growth and how important it is to eat healthily, linking well with those fruit salads. After half term we shall be travelling further afield - into space! Hopefully our role play area will be transformed into a rocket and who knows what exciting places we might visit. We will be finding out about space travel and write our own simple information books about space. As we near Christmas we will be learning more about electricity and hopefully making a simple circuit to play a space game.

The term will rounded off with all the traditional Christmas celebrations, including a visit from The Rainbow Theatre and our own nativity play!

Mrs Gill Mapp will be teaching every Tuesday to allow me to carry out some of my Deputy Head duties, so don’t be surprised by a different face!

Skylarks will have PE on Monday afternoon and Tuesday morning. The children will require normal PE kit for both those days and, in particular, plimsolls or trainers which they can put on by themselves for both these lessons. Please could you check that plimsolls fit comfortably and are not too tight. Feet seem to have a habit of growing very quickly over summer holidays.

We look forward to a busy term’s learning.
