Wagtails Class - Autumn Term Learning

Welcome back and welcome to Wagtails class.
We hope you all enjoyed the summer holiday because Wagtails are about to fly off on a learning holiday journey again!
We shall be browsing holiday brochures and recording details in Wagtails Travel Agency, ready to find out about seaside holidays, past and present. We shall also be comparing holidays in England to those abroad, focusing on the Caribbean. After half term our learning journey will lead us to consider futuristic holidays in Space.

We shall start by considering holidays today, by collecting data about our own holiday locations and marking these on a large world map. We will be designing and writing our own postcards, ensuring that we make them interesting. We will also be writing address labels and making our own Wagtail passports! We will be reading story texts about holidays, thinking about characters, and use this to create our own story based on a ‘lost’ suitcase.

Later, we will be writing information leaflets about the planets, trying to sell them as an interesting holiday resort! We will also be looking at and writing our own space poetry. Towards the end of the term we will be writing instructions for wrapping a parcel. In History we shall be asking you for your own holiday memories and will be finding out what holidays were like a hundred years ago. It will be interesting to see how things have changed, but also if any seaside activities have stayed the same. Also, in Geography, we will be finding out about holidays abroad, looking at a world map and learning more about the weather in different holiday locations. In Design and Technology we are going on a learning journey to find out what makes a good Caribbean fruit salad. This will be linked to Maths, where we shall be weighing ingredients necessary to carry out a recipe.

Our Science learning is primarily about growth and how important it is to eat healthily, linking well with those fruit salads. As we near Christmas we will be learning more about light and dark and linking this to Space. This will link in with our Art learning, where we will be designing and sewing our very own star! I will be very grateful for helpers nearer the time to thread needles!
The term will be rounded off with all the traditional Christmas celebrations, including a visit from The Rainbow Theatre and our own nativity play!

Mrs Lesley Ritchie will be teaching Religious Education every Tuesday afternoon, where the children will focus on what it means to belong. We hope to have a church visit for this and so I will be grateful for helpers nearer the time.

Wagtails will have PE on Monday and Tuesday. The children will require normal PE kit for both those days and, in particular, plimsolls or trainers which they can put on by themselves for both these lessons. Please could you check that plimsolls fit comfortably and are not too tight. Feet seem to have a habit of growing very quickly over summer holidays.

We look forward to another year of fantastic learning!
